CBD, or cannabidiol, is all the rage at the moment. There are a lot of CBD items available for sale, including CBD products for cats and dogs. But what is CBD and how do you use it for pets?
What is CBD?
CBD is a cannabinoid, which means a chemical compound, in a cannabis plant. Some say there are more than 60, some say more than 100, the science is not quite sure yet. Click here for more details http://www.extraordinary-facts.com/. Of these cannabinoids, the types you have probably heard of are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). THC is a compound that makes you feel high. CBD doesn't make you feel stoned, but it does have therapeutic benefits and can be particularly useful in pain management.
How to use CBD safely for pets
There is plenty of scientific evidence that CBD is effective in the treatment of pain in humans. However, there is much less research on the use of CBD in cats and dogs. This does not mean that CBD is dangerous, only that veterinary science cannot prove it effective at the moment. It is also not regulated by the governing body and your vet cannot write a prescription for it. Despite the lack of scientific research on the subject, many pet owners claim that CBD products such as treats and oils have been extremely effective in treating pain and anxiety in their pets. When dosed correctly, many people claim success using CBD to treat pet nausea, arthritis pain, stress and a range of other conditions. In fact, it is safest to start with a smaller dose than suggested and work your way up. CBD products are legal in many states, as they are technically derived from hemp and not marijuana.
